A look at the roots of Cypress Wood
Cypress Wood Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America. As churches go, we are relatively young. In the early 1990s a small group of people began to meet and pray about starting a Presbyterian Church that would worship God and proclaim the Gospel in Golden Gate Estates. This led to a united effort by Covenant Presbyterian Church, Marco Island Presbyterian Church and the Southwest Florida Presbytery to start what is now Cypress Wood Presbyterian. The church was started in 1993. The first worship service was held in February, 1993 at Golden Terrace Elementary School. Fifty-one people were present at that first service.
The congregation grew and was organized as a Particular Church by the Southwest Florida Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America. The organizational service was held in February 1995. Reverend Bruce Fiol preached in the service and Reverend Jim Conrad led in receiving the membership vows from 45 charter members.
The congregation met at Golden Terrace from 1993-1997. During that time God led us to our current property on Golden Gate Blvd. between Max Hasse Community Park and Big Cypress Elementary school. The congregation responded wonderfully to this opportunity and we purchased the property. In 1998 the congregation moved from Golden Terrace to Naples Christian Academy where we worshipped until 1999. During this time God provided a special matching gift that was met by the congregations of Covenant, Marco Island, and Cypress Wood. This allowed us to build our current sanctuary. The first worship service was held in July, 1999.
Rev. Michael Kendrick was the founding pastor. He and his wife Sherry served at Covenant Presbyterian Church before receiving the call to plant Cypress Wood. Mike and Sherry served faithfully for 15 years before transitioning to another calling.
In November 2008, the Church called Rev. Jonathan Loerop to serve as pastor. He and his wife Jessica served at Marco Presbyterian Church for five and a half years before receiving the call to Cypress Wood. Pastor Jonathan and Jessica have two boys, Nathan (2006) and Andrew (2009). "God made His hand evident in calling us to Cypress Wood. I was made aware the leadership was interested in speaking to me less than a month before being voted in by the congregation as pastor. We didn't even have to move since our home is between both churches. In this economy that was an amazing blessing."
God has truly been faithful to this congregation and we look forward to equipping faithful disciple-makers in Golden Gate Estates, Collier County, and to the ends of the earth.
